Essential Health & Safety

Ensure Your Business is Safe and Compliant with Essential Health and Safety Practices

Maintaining a safe and compliant workplace is critical to protecting your business, your team, and your clients. From conducting regular risk assessments to having a clear health and safety policy, there are several key areas to focus on to minimize hazards and stay compliant with regulations.

Risk Assessments: Identify any potential hazards in your workplace and evaluate the risks they may pose. Regular assessments help ensure that necessary precautions are in place to prevent accidents.

Health and Safety Policy: Even for small businesses, it’s essential to have a clear, written health and safety policy. This document should outline your commitment to maintaining a safe work environment and detail how you will address potential risks. (Source)

Emergency Procedures: Develop an emergency plan that includes procedures for evacuation, first aid, and fire safety. Ensure all employees are aware of what to do in case of an emergency. (Source)

Training and Supervision: Provide training to your staff on how to handle tools, equipment, or materials safely. Regular training ensures that everyone knows their responsibilities and how to act in unsafe situations.

First Aid: Keep a well-stocked first aid kit on-site and designate a staff member to oversee first aid arrangements. It’s also beneficial to have trained first-aid personnel, especially in higher-risk industries. As Advised by the HSE an Arborist personal first Aid Kit should contain:

  • Stockholm Bag (can be attached to belt) –
  • Dimensions: 20cm (H) x 14cm (W) x 8cm (D)
  • CAT Tourniquet
  • Traumafix Dressing
  • Celox Sachet 15g
  • Safety Whistle
  • Toughcut Shears
  • Nitrile Gloves
  • Washproof Plasters (20 x assorted)
  • Alcohol Free wipes
  • Eyepad Dressing
  • Eye Wash Pods (2 x 20ml)
  • Rebreath Face Shield (Source)

Workplace Maintenance: Ensure that your workplace is clean, safe, and well-maintained. This includes making sure floors are clear of obstructions, exits are accessible, and that machinery is properly serviced and safe to use.

Insurance Coverage: Having the right insurance is key to protecting your business. Public liability and employer’s liability insurance are two important types of coverage to consider, as they help protect you in case of an accident. By staying compliant with health and safety regulations, not only do you protect your business from potential fines and legal issues, but you also create a safe, productive environment for your team and clients.
