Choosing the Right MEWP Height: A Guide for Arborists

Selecting the right Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) is essential for efficient and safe arborist work. Height is crucial, but other factors, like the machine’s reach and movement capabilities, are equally important. Let’s go over the key considerations.

  1. Determine How High You Really Need to Reach

To avoid overspending on an unnecessarily powerful MEWP, calculate the exact height needed for your tasks. For instance, if you need to reach 60 feet, a boom lift with a “working height” of 66 feet (accounting for a worker’s reach) will be ideal.

  1. Vertical Reach vs. Horizontal Outreach

Understanding whether you only need to go up or also need to reach horizontally is important. For instance, telescopic or articulating booms offer extended outreach, allowing you to work around obstacles without repositioning the machine. This is often essential in tree trimming where branches extend outward, but you can also consider scissor lifts and self-propelled lifts if your job requires only vertical movement.

  1. Assess Horizontal Reach Requirements

If your work requires reaching far out from your base, consider the weight of any tools and materials you’ll be lifting, as MEWP capacities range from 130kg to 450kg pounds or more. Ensure the machine’s rated capacity covers your requirements to keep operations safe and compliant.

4.Consider Range of Motion for Worksite Accessibility

The “range of motion” of a MEWP, or its “working envelope,” combines vertical and horizontal reach capabilities to determine how far out and high it can go. Range of Motion charts provide a visual of this coverage, helping you ensure the MEWP can access the necessary areas without repositioning.
